Commercial property area guide: Manchester - England

Commercial properties to rent in Manchester

The most populous built-up area in the UK after London, Manchester attracts swathes of visitors, businesses and residents. Awash with museums, restaurants, bars, galleries, hotels, music venues and major businesses, it is a buzzing city and an exciting place to live and work.

Manchester is known around the world as the birthplace of the industrial revolution, which saw it grow at an astonishing rate thanks to textile manufacturing and later the engineering and chemical industries. Financial services companies expanded to the city to support these trades, creating a commercial hub. It was the home of the first intercity passenger railway (between Manchester and Liverpool), and it boasts a historic canal that enabled ships to sail to the city.

Also known for its role in the labour party, Marxism and Suffragette movement, Manchester has helped shape UK society and it remains a city dedicated to innovation and new ways of thinking. Today, it is recognised as a media city, with both the BBC and ITV broadcasting major TV shows from the city. The Guardian newspaper was founded in Manchester, and it has the highest number of local radio stations outside London.

Thanks to its ties to great literature, with a number of celebrated novels based in the city, Manchester has been named a UNESCO City of Literature.
