Travel and transport in Wigan

 

Wigan has two train stations close to the town centre. Wigan Wallgate and Wigan North Western are located virtually opposite each other in the centre of the town. Services run from Wallgate to the east and west, as well as to Manchester Airport, Manchester city and Stockport. North Western station is on the electrified West Coast main line and express trains run to London Euston, Birmingham, Edinburgh and Glasgow among other destinations.

Two airports are within an hour’s drive of Wigan. Manchester Airport and Liverpool’s John Lennon Airport are both around 45 minutes from the centre of Wigan. Both offer a range of domestic flights together with long and short haul international flights to destinations around the world.

Wigan is well connected by road. Wigan is located on the intersection of the A49 and A577 roads and is close to the M6, M61 and M58 motorways. It has an excellent network of buses across the town centre and connects with surrounding suburbs and towns like Bolton, Leigh and Rochdale. Most can be caught from the recently redeveloped Wigan bus station, located just off Market Street.

Wigan was once the centre of the ‘Northern Soul’ dance movement, attracting thousands from across the region to all-night events at Wigan Casino. It now hosts an international jazz festival every summer.

Famous retailer Marks & Spencer was born in the town when its two founders met there in 1894 and spent three years as the HQ for the retailer.
