Getting around Leeds

Leeds has an extensive road network

One of the largest population hubs in the northwest of England, Leeds is well connected to large cities and towns in its immediate vicinity. From Leeds, cities such as Bradford, Manchester, Hull and York can be reached via motorway. Within Leeds itself, vehicular travel is seamless and easy, facilitating a steady stream of people and goods travelling around the region.

Developed rail connections

Leeds has one of the busiest train stations in the UK. Leeds train station is the second busiest rail hub outside of London, with plenty of large-scale investments forecast that will see its expansion to make room for new and faster rail connections. While Leeds had initially been set to play a central role in the High Speed 2 (HS2) railway, the northern leg of this line has since been cancelled, meaning that any future plans for the expansion of this station will not immediately include capacity for high speed rail.

Unlike many other large cities, Leeds relies on a singular central train station to process much of the city’s rail traffic, meaning that this station can often prove to be a pinch-point for the northwest rail network. To offset the cancellation of the HS2 line, work will soon begin on developing a tram system in Leeds. Often dubbed the largest city in western Europe without a mass transit system, plans for the Leeds tram network are yet to be confirmed, but this transit network is expected to help ease the pressures on the city’s transport, and will improve connections throughout the greater metropolitan region.

Two airports

Leeds has two airports within commuting distance. The larger Leeds-Bradford airport runs regular routes to international and European locations, and there are plans for a sizable expansion to this airport with a new terminal which will increase its visitors from around four million to seven million.

Leeds East airport is a smaller airport between Leeds and York that primarily serves private and chartered flights.
